Hosting review
Hostwinds review
Trustpilot · 729 reviews · as of 2026-10-01
Verdict: Cheap and flexible on paper, but the current 2.1/5 Trustpilot sentiment is a serious caution for support-dependent buyers.
From: $4.54/mo (Basic shared intro — promotional, verify at checkout)
Hostwinds offers very cheap, highly configurable shared, VPS and cloud hosting aimed at self-managing developers. The honest caveat leads: its live Trustpilot score is a Poor 2.1/5 from 727 reviews (as of Aug 2026), far below the ~4/5 figures still quoted by some blogs, with recent reviewers citing support, billing and reliability complaints. It suits price-driven, technical buyers who can tolerate variable support, not support-dependent beginners.

Who this is for
- Developers wanting cheap, scalable VPS or cloud they can manage themselves
- Tinkerers and hobbyists chasing low entry pricing and lots of configuration
- Users needing Windows VPS or hourly-billed, resize-on-demand cloud servers
- Budget buyers who can tolerate inconsistent support and billing experiences
Benefits
Low entry pricing across the board
Cheap starting prices span shared, VPS and cloud, with shared from around $4.54/mo (Basic) and managed Linux VPS from around $7.14/mo. Renewal is higher, so verify at checkout.
Broad, configurable product menu
A wide ladder from shared and business hosting up to reseller, managed and unmanaged VPS (Linux and Windows), cloud servers and dedicated machines, with room to scale.
Flexible cloud servers
Highly configurable cloud servers billed hourly or monthly make it straightforward to size up or down for changing workloads.
Managed and unmanaged options
Both managed and self-managed VPS are available, plus Windows options, giving technical users control over how much they run themselves.
Verdict at a glance
Hostwinds is a budget, configuration-heavy host built around inexpensive shared plans and highly scalable VPS and cloud servers. On paper it is appealing for self-managing developers and tinkerers who want low prices, a lot of control and plenty of room to grow.
The honest headline, though, is public customer sentiment. On Trustpilot, Hostwinds scores 2.2/5 from about 729 reviews (as of October 2026; we recorded 2.1/5 from 727 reviews in August). Trustpilot classes that as "Poor". Many third-party review blogs still quote Hostwinds at around 4/5, and some of those pages are vendor-run or affiliate-driven, so the gap between marketing-era ratings and the live public record is itself a reason for caution. Complaints on Trustpilot cluster around billing after cancellation, support responsiveness and reliability, although some long-term customers are loyal and enthusiastic.
Two other facts shape the decision. Hostwinds was acquired by HostPapa in April 2026, so the company behind it is changing. And its refund window is only 72 hours, far shorter than the 30 days typical elsewhere. If you want to try it, start with a short billing term.
We did not run our own benchmarks for this review. Performance statements come from Hostwinds' own materials and third-party testers, and we say so where it matters.
Who it's for
Hostwinds suits the budget-and-control end of the market:
- Developers and technical users who want cheap, scalable VPS or cloud servers and are comfortable managing them (including unmanaged options).
- Tinkerers and hobbyists who value low entry pricing and many configurable options.
- Users who need Windows VPS or hourly-billed cloud servers that can be resized.
- Resellers and small agencies who want reseller hosting with cPanel on a low-cost platform.
It is a weaker fit if you are a beginner, if you need a long refund window to test a service, or if you need to be confident that billing and support interactions will go smoothly. Those are the areas where reviewers report problems. Customers who need a bundled free domain, or servers outside the US and Western Europe, should also look elsewhere.
Pricing and plans
Everything here was read from Hostwinds pages and third-party reports on 1 October 2026. Prices are entry-level or promotional, vary with billing term (Hostwinds offers terms from one month up to 36 months, with longer terms discounted) and change often. Third-party sources disagree on exact figures, so treat every number as approximate and verify at checkout.
Shared and business hosting
- Shared (Basic, Advanced, Ultimate): Hostwinds' own review page says shared starts from $3.29/mo. Other reviewers quote Basic around $3.24 to $4.54/mo, Advanced around $4.54/mo and Ultimate around $5.84/mo on promotional terms, with renewals in the roughly $5 to $11/mo range depending on source and tier. The discrepancies suggest pricing varies by term and over time. Included on shared plans: SSD storage, cPanel, free SSL, unlimited bandwidth as marketed, unlimited email accounts and databases, and free migration.
- Business hosting: from around $5.99/mo, with LiteSpeed web server, aimed at higher-traffic sites.
- Reseller hosting: available with cPanel/WHM; confirm current plan pricing on the Hostwinds site.
Managed Linux VPS (cloud servers)
Hostwinds lists ten managed Linux tiers, all with 1 Gbps ports and SSD storage:
- Starter: 1 CPU, 1 GB RAM, 30 GB, 1 TB bandwidth, from $7.14/mo.
- Basic: 1 CPU, 2 GB RAM, 50 GB, 2 TB, from $14.29/mo.
- Standard: 2 CPU, 4 GB RAM, 75 GB, 2 TB, from $25.99/mo.
- Pro: 2 CPU, 6 GB RAM, 100 GB, 2 TB, from $33.14/mo.
- Business: 4 CPU, 8 GB RAM, 150 GB, 3 TB, from $51.99/mo.
- Advanced: 4 CPU, 12 GB RAM, 200 GB, 4 TB, from $64.99/mo.
- Professional: 6 CPU, 16 GB RAM, 300 GB, 5 TB, from $95.54/mo.
- Enterprise: 8 CPU, 32 GB RAM, 400 GB, 6 TB, from $146.24/mo.
- Ultimate: 12 CPU, 64 GB RAM, 500 GB, 8 TB, from $237.89/mo.
- Maximum: 16 CPU, 96 GB RAM, 750 GB, 9 TB, from $342.54/mo.
An unmanaged option is advertised as roughly half the price. Managed Windows VPS starts around $12.74/mo according to Hostwinds' own review page. Dedicated servers are custom-configured; third-party figures put them from about $122/mo upward, but we could not confirm that on Hostwinds' own pages.
Refund policy
This is the biggest billing gotcha. Hostwinds' refund page says refunds are prorated and must be requested within 72 hours of the payment transaction, after cancelling in the client portal. Domains, SSL certificates, IP addresses, software licences, hourly-billed services, services terminated for policy violations and anything paid for with cryptocurrency are not refundable. Refunds go back only to credit card, PayPal or Alipay payments; other methods get account credit. Older longer windows (a 60-day guarantee, and more recent 30-day or 14-day prorated terms for long billing cycles reported by third parties) no longer appear on the current page we read, so rely on the 72-hour rule.
Free extras, add-ons and gotchas
- Free migration: complimentary website transfers, per Hostwinds' own guide, within 60 days of signup.
- No free domain, per Hostwinds' own review page.
- Backups: the Hostwinds guide describes daily cPanel backups on shared and business plans, and snapshots plus paid object-storage backups on cloud and dedicated. One independent reviewer (Website Planet) reported that backups are a separately purchased service, so check what you actually get.
- Billing after cancellation: Trustpilot reviewers report charges continuing after cancelling VPS plans, including for attached volumes. Cancel properly and check your invoices.
- Auto-suspension: one reviewer says servers are suspended after a failed payment.
Key features
- Cheap entry pricing on shared, VPS and cloud.
- Ten managed Linux tiers with easy resizing through the cloud portal.
- Managed and unmanaged options, Linux and Windows.
- cPanel on shared hosting and cPanel/WHM options on VPS.
- Own infrastructure: Hostwinds says it owns its hardware, so staff can address hardware-level issues.
- Snapshots and custom ISO support on cloud servers.
- Enterprise firewall listed on VPS plans.
- Free website migration (within 60 days of signup).
- 99.9999% uptime SLA (a vendor claim; see below).
Performance and infrastructure
Data centres. Hostwinds operates in three places: Seattle (Washington) and Dallas (Texas) in the US, and Amsterdam in the Netherlands, per its own guide and the HostPapa acquisition announcement. Hostwinds' own review page still says US-only, which looks out of date. There is no Asia-Pacific location.
Redundancy and uptime. Hostwinds markets 2N redundancy for power, cooling and networking and a 99.9999% uptime guarantee with SLA credits. That is a marketing claim and an unusually strong one. An independent reviewer at Website Planet measured 99.982% during their test, which is good but below the claim, and found page load times that varied between roughly 0.9 and 2.9 seconds on shared hosting. That is one tester's snapshot, not a verdict.
Storage and caching. SSD storage is standard. LiteSpeed is listed on the business hosting tier. We could not confirm a built-in CDN on every plan.
Our position. We did not run independent benchmarks. Treat the figures above as reports from Hostwinds and a third-party tester. Shared environments are shared, so results vary.
Support
Hostwinds advertises 24/7/365 live chat (it says typical response is under two minutes), a ticket system and phone support, and its own guide lists a phone number. Several reviewers praise the chat team and pre-sales support. One Trustpilot reviewer, however, says only ticketing is available and calls the support team slow, and a third-party tester reported uneven technical support quality (excellent pre-sales chat, but a technical agent who broke their site while changing a redirect). Managed support is also described as inconsistent.
The pattern we see: experiences are highly variable. Some customers of many years are delighted, others describe slow or unhelpful responses. If you plan to rely on managed support, test it with a few real questions during your first 72 hours, while you can still get a refund.
Security
- Firewall: an enterprise firewall is listed on VPS plans.
- SSL: free SSL on shared plans; SSL certificates bought separately are non-refundable.
- Backups: daily cPanel backups on shared and business per Hostwinds, snapshots on cloud, and paid options as noted. Verify retention and cost.
- Unmanaged VPS: you are responsible for hardening, patching and malware defence.
- Managed VPS: Hostwinds says it provides server management and monitoring, but one Trustpilot reviewer reports paying extra for management and still losing their server to a ransomware attack. We cannot verify that account, but it is a reason to keep your own off-site backups.
- Account security: we could not verify two-factor authentication support from the sources we read. Check your client portal.
Ease of use and migration
Shared hosting uses cPanel, which is familiar to most site owners and agencies. Free migration is part of the pitch. The website builder is described by one reviewer as functional but less polished than dedicated builders. Cloud and VPS require more hands-on management through the Hostwinds cloud portal. You can resize servers, take snapshots and deploy from an image. For beginners, the learning curve on VPS is steep, and unmanaged plans assume you know what you are doing. The onboarding is therefore better suited to people who are comfortable with Linux or Windows server administration.
Hosting types offered
- Shared hosting (Basic, Advanced, Ultimate)
- Business hosting (LiteSpeed)
- Reseller hosting
- Linux VPS / cloud servers (managed and unmanaged, ten tiers)
- Windows VPS
- Dedicated servers
- Cloud (SSD) with scaling and hourly or monthly billing
This is a wide ladder with a cheap entry point. The cloud and VPS range is the clearest strength.
Who owns Hostwinds
Hostwinds was founded in 2010 by Peter Holden and is headquartered in Seattle. On 29 April 2026, HostPapa announced it had acquired Hostwinds. HostPapa is a web-hosting company that has also been acquiring other infrastructure businesses, and the announcement said Hostwinds would keep its identity within the HostPapa family and that customers would continue to receive the same service, now backed by HostPapa's scale. HostPapa gains Hostwinds' Seattle, Dallas and Amsterdam facilities.
What this means for you in practice is not yet clear. Acquisitions sometimes bring better resources and sometimes bring changes in support or billing. Since the deal is recent, treat any older review (including the older 4/5 ratings still on blogs) as describing the pre-acquisition company, and watch for how post-acquisition reviews develop.
What real users say
We looked for real customer discussion. This section is grounded in Hostwinds' Trustpilot page (read 1 October 2026), a small set of r/webhosting threads found via search on the same date, and third-party reviews listed in Sources. Sentiment is polarised.
Recurring praise
- Fast, courteous support for some long-term customers.
"Hostwinds is a godsend for me...their support staff responds immediately and is always very courteous." (a Trustpilot reviewer, May 2026)
- Good value shared hosting for startups.
"Great place to but shared hosting, I bought advanced shared hosting for my startup in august 2026 and its working very well." (a Trustpilot reviewer, September 2026)
- Independent reviewers also credit the low entry price and the breadth of VPS and dedicated choices.
Recurring complaints
- Reliability and support.
"The worst servers, hosting, and customer support I have ever experienced." (a one-star Trustpilot reviewer, May 2026)
- Billing after cancellation.
"we cancelled our VPS late 2024, but they have been charging us until now. June 2025." (a one-star Trustpilot reviewer, June 2025)
- Billing system and auto-suspension. Another one-star reviewer calls the billing department "a disaster" and complains of servers suspended after failed payments (March 2026).
- Data loss and security incidents. Individual reviewers report a server being deleted and a ransomware wipe despite paid management. These are unverified single accounts, but they are serious enough to justify backing up independently.
What Reddit says
Reddit discussion of Hostwinds is thin and skews mixed to negative. The themes are slow ticket responses and "unmetered" claims that come with limits in the fine print. Some of these threads are several years old, so they may not reflect the current service, and the volume is too small to treat as a verdict.
"Their support takes at least 24 hours to respond to tickets (even updates)." (a user in r/webhosting)
"Claims unmetered but has 10 Tb in small print." (a user in r/webhosting, on a VPS plan)
Net read: a genuinely split picture. The loyal, long-term reviewers are real, but billing and reliability complaints recur and drag the public score down to 2.2/5.
Pros
- Very low entry pricing across shared, VPS and cloud.
- Broad, scalable VPS and cloud range with ten managed Linux tiers.
- Managed and unmanaged options, plus Windows VPS.
- Three data centres in Seattle, Dallas and Amsterdam.
- Free website migration and cPanel on shared hosting.
- Phone, live chat and ticket support advertised 24/7.
- Strong uptime SLA on paper (99.9999% with credits).
- Loyal long-term customers praise responsive support.
- Parent company backing following the HostPapa acquisition, which may bring more resources.
Cons
- Poor public sentiment: 2.2/5 from about 729 Trustpilot reviews (October 2026).
- 72-hour refund window only, with several exclusions.
- Billing complaints: charges after cancellation and suspensions after failed payments.
- Inconsistent support, especially for technical and managed issues.
- Reliability complaints and variable shared-hosting speed in a third-party test.
- Unconfirmed backup inclusion on some plans and paid backup add-ons.
- No free domain.
- No Asia-Pacific data centre.
- Uncertainty from the recent acquisition, with unclear effects on pricing and support.
- Gap between legacy 4/5 ratings on blogs and current public sentiment.
How Hostwinds compares
In our twenty-host set, Hostwinds sits at the bottom on verified public sentiment. Its 2.2/5 Trustpilot score is lower than boutique leaders such as Scala Hosting (4.9/5), TMDHosting (4.8/5) and FastComet (4.7/5), and lower than mainstream hosts like Bluehost (4.5/5) and Liquid Web (3.8/5).
Versus Hostinger. Hostinger scores 4.6/5 from about 72,700 reviews and is much more beginner-friendly, with a 30-day money-back guarantee against Hostwinds' 72 hours. Hostwinds counters with phone support, cPanel, Windows VPS, hourly cloud billing and a wider spread of dedicated options.
Versus Liquid Web. Both target the managed-VPS and dedicated end of the market. Liquid Web scores 3.8/5 in our set, which is also not top-tier but better than Hostwinds, and it is generally priced higher.
Versus FastComet. At the budget end, FastComet scores 4.7/5 in our data and is a better-reviewed choice for shared hosting buyers who put support reliability first.
If you want cheap self-managed cloud or VPS and are confident in running it, Hostwinds' product can still appeal. If reliable support and billing matter to you at all, several hosts here offer cheap plans with much stronger verified sentiment.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hostwinds a good host?
It depends on what you value. The product range is broad and cheap, and some long-term customers are delighted. But Trustpilot sentiment is Poor (2.2/5), with recurring billing and reliability complaints, so we would not recommend it to beginners.
Does Hostwinds have a money-back guarantee?
Only a short one. Its refund page says refunds must be requested within 72 hours of the payment, and are prorated. Domains, SSL certificates, IPs, hourly-billed services and crypto payments are excluded.
Where are Hostwinds' data centres?
Seattle and Dallas in the US and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. It has no Asia-Pacific location. Some Hostwinds pages still mention only US locations, which appears out of date.
Who owns Hostwinds?
HostPapa announced the acquisition of Hostwinds on 29 April 2026. Hostwinds was founded in 2010 in Seattle and is expected to keep its brand within HostPapa.
Is Hostwinds' 99.9999% uptime real?
That is a marketing SLA with credits, not a measurement. One independent tester recorded 99.982% over their test. Read the SLA terms before relying on it.
Does Hostwinds have phone support?
Hostwinds advertises phone support alongside live chat and tickets, and lists a phone number in its guide. One Trustpilot reviewer says support is ticket-only, so confirm availability in your own account.
Final verdict
Hostwinds is a cheap, flexible, configuration-rich host that can suit self-managing developers who want scalable VPS and cloud on a budget. It has real strengths: a broad product range, three data centres, cPanel and free migration, and a base of loyal customers.
But the verified public signal has to lead. Its current Trustpilot score is 2.2/5 from about 729 reviews (as of October 2026), with complaints about billing after cancellation, support and reliability, and its refund window is only 72 hours. The ownership change to HostPapa adds uncertainty. If the pricing draws you in, start on a short billing term, test support early while a refund is still possible, keep your own off-site backups, cancel carefully and check your invoices. On today's evidence, Hostwinds is a bet on price and flexibility over satisfaction.
